“BARRIQUE, THE NEW LIFE OF WOOD ”
The wood of the barriques aged by time and by the presence of the wine contained in the casks, is not destroyed but is revived thanks to this project that aims at recycling, environmental sustainability and social awareness.
The Doga table makes the most of the curvature of the casks in the four legs, which are slightly concave compared to the tabletop, giving them a nice, sober shape, and in the tabletop, made from the combination of several curved staves. The stave is treated like a basic unit of material, as a module that, repeated, linked in a straightforward joint and supported by the metal structure, also contributes a material worth to the object.
BARRIQUE, OAK WOOD
The San Patrignano community has successfully developed an important wine-growing activity appreciated in Italy and abroad for the great quality of the wine. These wines age in barrique and tonneau, capable of containing 225 or 500 liters, all made of French oak seasoned in the open air for at least three years. In the cellar, however, the useful life of each of these containers is only 3 harvests. Therefore, after a maximum use of three years, without the reuse of the “Barrique” project, the wood of these casks would be used as a pulp.
Each stave that makes up a barrique is unique, has different sizes and shapes, and is made of such a vibrant material which may only be used ten days after having opened the casks. Its curvature, a product of the heat of fire, and their wine color, a lasting mark of the must that is left to ferment ensure that it’s a living material, firstly requiring interpretation and then modelling. It is waste wood, yet it remains a noble material.
